Orlando City sends Facundo Torres to Brazil via transfer

Orlando City’s best offensive player, Facundo Torres, is headed to South America for a Lions-record reported $14 million transfer fee, the team announced Friday.

The Designated Player from the Lions will play for Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras of Brazil’s Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, pending a medical.

Torres, a 24-year-old from Uruguay, made 113 starts in 123 appearances for the Lions across all competitions, compiling a club-record 47 goals and 25 assists.

“Today I say goodbye to a club that marked an unforgettable stage in my career and in my life, my first experience as a professional away from home,” Torres said via statement. “I leave with pride for what we achieved together and with the satisfaction of having left my mark on this club that will always be special to me. I wish you the greatest success in the future. Thank you for everything, Orlando. I’ll miss you.”

Torres also set an Orlando City record for most goals scored in a single season (20), leading the Lions to their first Eastern Conference final before falling to the New York Red Bulls last month. He surpassed Cyle Larin’s marks for both.

The Uruguayan winger is also Orlando City’s all-time leader in goal contributions, with 72 total.

Torres joined the Lions in 2022 and was instrumental in them winning their first trophy in the MLS that same year (Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup).

Orlando City finished No. 4 in the East this year. In 2023, the Lions were No. 2 with Torres leading the way.

This is the third transaction between Orlando City and Palmeiras. The Lions have acquired former defender Antonio Carlos and current winger Iván Angulo from the São Paulo side.

Said GM Luiz Muzzi via statement: “He has been involved in so many great moments and successes during his time here that will leave a lasting legacy in our history. Because of that success, Facu has generated the attention of the global market, and this is a move that, at this time, makes sense for both Facundo and Orlando City. Not only does this continue a great and established relationship with a successful club in Palmeiras, but it shows our success in developing young talent into world stars.”
