Chiefs’ luck against the spread in 2024 matches the dynasty Patriots

At this late stage of the 2024 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs’ mystifying luck in one-score games is beyond comprehension. It sure looks like they’re gonna keep getting away with it. After doinking a game-winning field goal against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night, the AFC’s current No. 1 seed is 12-1 … with a 10-0 record in one-score games.

Do you know HOW fortunate you have to be for THAT kind of winning formula to hold up for almost three months?!

I understand a team with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid sometimes makes its own luck, but this is beyond the pale. The ball usually does not bounce (or doink) in one team’s favor this much in a chaotic game like football.

It’s unreal.

The Chiefs’ record while losing the spread is probably even more unfathomable. After the latest doink victory, they have officially tied the NFL record for the most straight-up wins against a spread losing streak with  … Tom Brady’s New England Patriots, who also up to seven straight games in 2007.

How am I not surprised? These Chiefs matching those Patriots, specifically, is the perfect allegory for the new dominant team everyone in the league outside of Kansas City is sick of:

Like those Patriots, we can probably dread the Chiefs. We can run from them, too. But destiny still arrives in the form of Mahomes weirdly always having the ball in his hands at the end of the game to close out an uninspiring win Kansas City probably didn’t deserve.

Oh, well. Maybe the Chiefs’ penance will come during the upcoming postseason. Because if you remember anything else about the 2007 Patriots — what’s up, New York Giants fans? — they didn’t win it all.
